Artists: The Truth About August (Carolyn Shulman and Jen Hitt) Jen Hitt and Rodef Shalom’s own Carolyn Shulman are The Truth About August, a Denver-based folk/Americana duo. Jen and Carolyn are longtime friends who have made music together since 1999, when they met as students at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Jen studied classical voice and composition, while Carolyn wrote and performed acoustic, folky music in small bars and coffee shops. Drawn together by a common love of folk music and songwriting, they quickly found their styles melded and complemented each other. The duo began performing together in venues around Houston, and in 2002, they were honored to perform in the University Songwriter’s Showcase at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Life after college found them living in separate cities, but fate brought the pair together again when Jen moved to Denver in July 2017. Carolyn and Jen picked up where they left off and began collaborating on music again that August. They currently play in venues around Denver, performing their original songs and the occasional carefully curated cover.
