Strategic Plan
Rodef Shalom’s Mission
Rodef Shalom is excited to share our updated Strategic Plan, a comprehensive and forward-looking framework to guide our synagogue’s continued growth, vitality, and impact. Rooted in our mission—to animate Judaism and Jewish community through soulful prayer, inspiring learning, impactful social action, and powerful relationships—this plan reflects the voices of our diverse membership and the shared commitment to build a thriving, inclusive congregation.
Our Vision for the Future
We envision a community where people of all backgrounds are empowered with the tools and support to live meaningful Jewish lives—connecting ancient tradition with modern relevance. Rodef will be a place where youth and adults alike find purpose in prayer and Torah, support in community, joy in Jewish practice, and a shared commitment to repairing the world. The goal of the strategic plan is to bring us closer to this vision.
Organizational Philosophy: “Chupah”
The Organizational Philosophy is a way of thinking about what we learned during the research phase and how those learnings informed the arrangement of the current strategic plan. We can use this to understand how each aspect of the plan plays a role in the overall success of the organization.
Rodef Shalom’s mission–to cultivate meaningful, inclusive, and life-enriching Jewish experiences–is achieved through four central activities: prayer, social action, learning, and community. In this plan, we call these four mission-relevant areas our pillars. In particular, the insights from our data collection made clear that participatory Jewish ritual opportunities, cultivation of friendships, and lifelong educational experiences are central motivators for all demographics to remain connected to Rodef Shalom.
We can visualize this system as if it were a “Chupah,” where the surrounding areas support, maintain and make possible the core work at the center. The stronger the outer structure is, the more support it can offer to the central mission.
The strategic plan directly reflects each of the components of the “Chupah”. It starts by Strengthening and Integrating the Four Pillars, because they constitute the central mission of the congregation. The plan then goes on to strategize around the other three areas: Organizational Health; Leadership; Financial Health, Growth; Sustainability; and Infrastructure; Facilities. These areas are critical for supporting and making the core pillars possible. The plan serves as a roadmap for accomplishing these steps—ensuring that clear focus on mission-centric activities, combined with appropriate support, will help Rodef to succeed and thrive.
Core Mission Pillars
At the heart of our plan is investment in the four central pillars of our mission. Each reflects a commitment to excellence and integration across and between one another:
Spiritual Life (Ruchaniut): We believe in the centrality of soulful Jewish prayer, emotional/spiritual growth, individual and communal Jewish practice, and spiritual wonder. This manifests in holiday celebrations, lifecycle events, and pastoral support. We are committed to a traditional egalitarian approach that is song-filled and “heimish”—and we work to be a welcoming space for Jews of many backgrounds. We strive to be both halakhic and innovative, participatory and transformative. Goal: We will nurture transformative prayer and spiritual experiences that are welcoming, participatory, and deeply rooted in tradition. Our goal is to elevate ritual life while making it accessible and inspiring for diverse Jewish journeys.
Education (Chinuch): We see Jewish education as a cornerstone of Jewish living at all ages and stages. Rodef believes engagement with Torah requires meeting learners where they are and helping each person find ways that Torah can bring holiness into their lives. Goal: We aim to expand and enhance lifelong Jewish learning—from enriching adult education to building meaningful teen and youth engagement. Our programs will be inclusive, relevant, and intergenerational.
Social Justice (Tzedek): Torah impresses on us the importance of working to shift our world from what it is to what we dream it can be. Together, we work to eradicate suffering, injustice, and indifference. Goal: We aspire to be a hub for Jewish social action, supporting both immediate service and long-term systems change. Our focus includes diversity of issues, community organizing, and partnerships grounded in Jewish ethics.
Community (Kehillah): We believe in fostering relational bonds—not transactional interactions. We work to integrate and strengthen relationships between community members in ways that lead to connection, safety, and belonging. We recognize that a strong (“thick”) community is both a process and an outcome that drives our mission. Goal: We will foster a strong, welcoming community where all members feel a sense of belonging. By growing membership, strengthening relational bonds, and increasing volunteer engagement, we aim to deepen the connective fabric of synagogue life.
Surrounding the pillars are three operational areas that allow our mission and pillars to thrive. These are:
Organizational Health & Leadership: We will strengthen governance by aligning board and staff leadership with clear strategic goals, building skills-based boards of trustees, and investing in strong management practices and communication.
Financial Health, Growth, & Sustainability: Rodef will develop a comprehensive, data-informed development strategy to ensure financial resilience. Our goals include diversifying revenue, expanding donor engagement, and exploring long-term initiatives such as endowment growth and campus expansion.
Infrastructure & Facilities: With a growing membership, we are committed to ensuring our physical space is welcoming, safe, and functional. This includes both short-term improvements and long-term planning for expanded use of our campus and enhanced security.
Our data collection demonstrated that each of these pillars alone partially supports Rodef’s mission, but together, they make us stronger and are mutually enhancing. As the image conveys, Rodef’s leadership believes that setting ambitious goals for strengthening each individual pillar, as well as integrating them with one another as much as possible, is likely to bring us closer to our vision.
Looking Ahead
Implementation of this plan will be guided by a Strategic Planning Implementation Committee, ensuring accountability, adaptability, and transparency. We will measure progress, adjust as needed, and keep our community informed every step of the way.
This plan represents a collective investment in Rodef Shalom’s future. By deepening our core offerings and strengthening the systems that support them, we will build a synagogue that honors our tradition while embracing the opportunities of today and tomorrow.
